Arsenal’s Europa League campaign could make or break Alexandre Lacazette’s World Cup ambitions

It’s fair to say that Alexandre Lacazette’s first season at Arsenal hasn’t exactly gone to plan, has it?

The striker was meant to be challenging for the Premier League Golden Boot this season, all the while helping the Gunners’ bid for the title.

But it hasn’t exactly worked out that way, with the former Lyon man struggling to find the back of net consistently this season.

And what’s worse is that his hot and cold campaign could see him miss out on this summer’s World Cup with France.

As it stands, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe are both more-or-less guaranteed a place in Didier Deschamps World Cup squad, while Olivier Giroud is considered a favourite of Deschamps’ and will likely be on the plane as well.

Lacazette, meanwhile, hasn’t always been in the coach’s plans and his unconvincing season in England will only count against him as the squad announcement for Russia looms ever-closer.

Fortunately, the 26-year-old has enjoyed a somewhat upward turn in form recently, netting seven times in April – including a brace against CSKA Moscow in the Europa League.

And he’ll be keen to add to his European tally in the second-leg, as Arsenal desperately seek a way past Atletico to reach the Europa League final.

The Gunners failed to capitalise on their home advantage, seeing Griezmann net a late equaliser to make the tie much more difficult for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Arsenal will be desperate to reach the Europa League final and win the competition for Wenger, with the manager hoping to lift a piece of European silverware with the club before he bows out at the end of the season.

And you can bet your life that Lacazette will be the one to watch in Madrid on Thursday, with goals on the big stage sure to help him get to Russia this summer.
