Gianluigi Buffon’s final appearance in the Champions League ends in red card disgrace

This was officially the maddest game of football we’ve ever seen.

Juventus gave Real Madrid the biggest scare in the history of Champions League after going 3-0 up at the Bernabeu with just minutes remaining on the clock.

But then Madrid got a late-as-you-like penalty, Gianluigi Buffon was sent off and Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to score from the spot to send Madrid through.

Now take a breather.

We thought Juve had done the unthinkable by scoring three goals at the home of Los Blancos, but on the 90th minute Lucas Vazquez was pushed from behind by Medhi Benatia in the box and referee Michael Oliver dramatically pointed to the spot.

The English ref, who’s always in the thick of it when it comes to contentious decisions, then showed a straight red card to Buffon after he frantically protested the decision.

And the Italian goalkeeper, who’s widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, has almost certainly appeared in his last Champions League game this evening. And it’s ended in complete disgrace.

Football eh. Nothing quite like it.

Buffon last March: "When they ask me how my last game will go, I tell them I don't think about that stuff. Maybe I'll close out like Zidane, giving someone a headbutt…"

Sending off Buffon is like shooting Bambi. Real got very lucky. Very soft pen. Michael Oliver is good ref but got that wrong. Big big call

While we probably think the penalty decision was correct – only just – the passionate side of us can’t quite believe Gigi has been sent off in his final European game.

It’s almost like Zinedine Zidane in his final ever game at the 2006 World Cup, isn’t it?
