England’s World Cup No 1 has conceded more goals than anyone else this season

Dream Team FC
England’s World Cup No 1 has conceded more goals than anyone else this season

Before we get started, we just want to say that Jordan Pickford is almost definitely our first choice as England’s No 1 this summer.

The Everton goalie is not just ‘the best of a bad bunch’ – he’s performed admirably for the Toffees this season in what has been an resoundingly difficult campaign.

Reuters Man in the spotlight[/caption]

But even so, we can’t help but notice that Pickford has conceded the most amount of goals in the Premier League this season.

In fact, Pickford has let in 53 goals in the league so far, after Man City’s 3-1 defeat of Everton at Goodison Park.

That’s more than Huddersfield’s Jonas Lossl (52) and (rather depressingly) England’s other option Jack Butland (51).

Reuters A regular sight this season[/caption]

He wasn’t too hot last season either, conceding 50 times for Sunderland as the Black Cats finished bottom of the Premier League.

We reckon had he started between the sticks ahead of Vito Mannone at the start of last season, then he probably would’ve finished behind Lukasz Fabianski (69) and Heurelho Gomes (64).

That’s mildly terrifying, when you think about it.

Rex Features He had a rough time last term, too[/caption]

But his manager Sam Allardyce has argued that his goals-conceded tally reflects the team’s general struggles this season and not the goalkeeper’s form.

He said: “He’s given Gareth a lot to think about with his performance the other night and his performances for us.

“People go on about him conceding a lot of goals for Everton but that is not the statistic you look at.

“You look at the saves he makes. He’s been far too busy on too many occasions for us but we have managed to reduce that during my time here from over two goals per game to 1.2 per game.

“He’s there when needed, he’s always been there when needed. All players make mistakes but his are few and far between.”

AFP or licensors Ahead of this guy[/caption]

Indeed, Pickford has been one of the few highlights of Everton’s grim campaign and has seen himself rise above Joe Hart as England’s first-choice, starting against Holland in the recent 1-0 win in Amsterdam.

Granted. Pickford didn’t have the busiest of nights against the Oranje in terms of having to make saves, but he seems to ooze confidence and is lovely with the ball at his feet.

Just look at this right here.

There’s the difference and some justification for Jordan Pickford playing right there. pic.twitter.com/O3Z6hmXClb

Jose Mourinho can say what he wants but he’s damaging Man United more than David Moyes or LVG

Dream Team FC
Jose Mourinho can say what he wants but he’s damaging Man United more than David Moyes or LVG

In many ways, it’s been a fairly successful season for Jose Mourinho, hasn’t it?

After all, Man United are currently second in the Premier League table, two points and a game-in-hand ahead of Liverpool and more-or-less safely inside the top four, with fifth-place Chelsea nine points away.

AFP or licensors Can Mourinho claim this season is a success?[/caption]

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets have this brilliant offer when you sign up and bet a fiver

They’re also through to the semi-final of the FA Cup, although they face a considerably tricky clash against Spurs to reach the final.

And overall, he can be pleased with the performances of summer signings Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, while David De Gea remains the world’s best goalkeeper and Marcus Rashford continues to be talked up as one of football’s most exciting youngsters.

EPA Rashford has struggled to become a regular starter at United under Mourinho[/caption]

But since the defeat to Sevilla in the last-16 Champions League, many fans and critics have somewhat changed their perception of Mourinho and his presence at United – including myself.

And before you roll your eyes, it’s not the first-round knockout that is has stuck in the craw of fans – after all, the club have under performed in the Champions League for a while now.

Mourinho even said so himself in his post-match ‘football heritage’ rant, saying: “In seven years, with four different managers, once not qualify for Europe, twice out in the group phase and the best was the quarter-final; this is football heritage.”

EPA Mourinho’s post-match press conference after the Sevilla game was perplexing – even by his standards[/caption]

But what’s really grinding the gears of the club’s supporters is the uninspiring, cautious and unadventurous football that he continues to insist upon, coupled with his outdated methods, general negativity and the juvenile me-against-the-world attitude that has resulted in the gloomy atmosphere around the club.

PLAY DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER Pick seven players to win £10k!

After the win against Brighton last weekend, Mourinho spectacularly hit out at his own players for their ‘lack of personality, class and desire’, singling-out academy graduate Scott McTominay and brutally dumping on Luke Shaw, with some even claiming he’s bullying the young defender.

Whatever you want to call it, it’s not tough love and it’s certainly not doing Shaw – or the atmosphere in the dressing room – any favours.

Reuters Luke Shaw has been constantly criticised by Mourinho[/caption]

Source close to Luke Shaw: "Mourinho's treatment of Luke is an absolute disgrace. If he has a problem with him the decent thing to do would be to keep it in-house. If this kind of abuse happened in any other workplace there'd be a case for constructive dismissal. It's disgusting"

— Kaveh Solhekol (@SkyKaveh) March 19, 2018

And in terms of ‘football heritage’, United are still living in the shadow of their success under Sir Alex Ferguson and have laboured under the management of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal ever since, but Mourinho’s decision to highlight the club’s lack of recent success does nothing to justify his own failings.

It’s fair to say that the club slumped under Moyes and plateaued with LVG, but something far worse is happening under Mourinho and it could go a long way to damaging United’s great legacy.

AP:Associated Press Finers in ears[/caption]

The club is becoming toxic, the atmosphere stoic and the gap to their rivals is widening in terms of success at Man City and excitement and firepower at Liverpool.

And the club’s long-time philosophy of excitement, vibrancy and youth has become overshadowed by Mourinho’s negative tactic, whining to the media and overbearing need to outspend his opponents.

"Get Mourinho out and get Steve Bruce as Man United manager!" 🔴

Passionate caller has a solution to all #MUFC's problems 👀 pic.twitter.com/9owC3ign1Q

— talkSPORT 📻 (@talkSPORT) March 14, 2018

Don’t get me wrong, whatever happens by the end of the season, nothing will take away the extreme success the Portuguese manager has enjoyed throughout his career, which includes Champions League success with Porto and Inter Milan and league titles in four different countries.

News Group Newspapers Ltd The Boss[/caption]

But Mourinho’s once-great reputation is gradually diminishing and seemingly taking United down with him.

His decision to turn on his own players and his failure to inspire that old siege mentality could spell the premature end to his time at Old Trafford if things haven’t changed by this time next season, or worse, he could seriously damage the heritage of the club that was built by Matt Busby and nurtured under Ferguson.

What a day it’s been for own goals.

First up was Eric Bailly who summoned his inner-Fernando Torres to beat David De Gea during Man United’s win against Liverpool.

Chelsea were already leading 1-0 trough a Willian goal when Davide Zappacosta beat Wayne Hennessey with a shot.

Luckily Martin Kelly was on hand to stop the shot with a goal-line clearance. Unluckily, his clearance smashed straight into Hennessey’s head.

The ball then bounced off Kelly’s leg and trickled into the net. A perfect moment to sum up Palace’s season.

Broadcasting laws mean we can’t show you the goal, but we’re sure someone more rebellious than us has stuck it on Twitter.

A deflection off Kelly was also responsible for the first goal so, if you wanted to be harsh, you could credit the defender with two own goals.

What was he doing before the game?

We can only assume he was breaking mirrors, walking under ladders and opening umbrellas inside the changing room.

And fans of the club were at their very best this evening ahead of their Europa League clash against Salzburg.

Before kick-off, they were given the chance to bid an emotional farewell to Marc Bartra, who left the German side for Real Betis back in January.

The Spaniard – who was club captain for a little while – was called back to his form side ahead of tonight’s game so he could receive a proper send off.

The 27-year-old left the club to enhance his chances of making Spain’s World Cup squad this summer, having fallen down the pecking order under new coach Peter Stoger, who replaced Peter Bosz in December.

The defender joined them from Barcelona in 2016, and made 49 appearances.

Claudio Bravo’s skills are so silky even Ederson had to smile

This is exactly what Pep Guardiola wants to see.

Not satisfied with his outfield players easily being the best passers in England, Pep wants to see great footwork from his keepers.

We know Ederson has been a sensation all season but Claudio Bravo is not taking his place on Man City’s bench lying down.

After his easy ride against Arsenal in the league cup final against Arsenal, Bravo was handed another start against Basel in the Champions League tonight.

Although the tie was already pretty much dead, with City leading 4-0 from the game in Basel, Bravo took his chance to show Pep exactly how good he is with his feet.

Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal since November and ended a 13-game dry spell for the opener before City gave Basel’s Mohamed Elyounoussi all the time in the world to equal the score line.

Calling Sergio Aguero likeGetty - Contributor

But at the end of the first half Bravo wowed the crowd with an amazing piece of skill.

A long ball was chipped forward and the Chilean burst out of his area to chest it round one player before cheekily dinking it over another Basel player’s head and then hammering it back up the other end.

It demonstrated a skillset Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be proud, and the guts to execute it when you’re the last man.
