What happened to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s France Under-21 team-mates?

Dream Team FC
What happened to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s France Under-21 team-mates?

First came Daniel Cousin. Then followed Didier Ndong. Mario Lemina wasn’t far behind.

Now Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will become the fourth Gabonese to play in the Premier League when he makes his Arsenal debut.

But it could have been so different. Aubameyang was eligible to play for Italy, Spain and France an international level.

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets have this brilliant offer when you sign up and bet a fiver Did you know that Gabon’s national dish is Poulet Nyembwe?Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.

His first appearance for Gabon came when he was a Dijon player in March 2009, on loan from AC Milan and a million miles away from the French, Italian and Spanish national squads.

One month earlier he’d had a brief taste of international football with France when he stepped out for the Under-21s against Tunisia in a 1-1 draw.

It’s fair to say the players he shared a changing room with on that day have had mixed results in the following nine years.

Who went on to play for France’s senior side?

Star student from Aubameyang’s Class of 2009 is none of than Moussa Sissoko- as much as that might surprise Spurs fans- given the 28-year-old has gone on to make 53 appearances for France.

Silver medal goes to Mamadou Sakho, who’s played 28 times for France, with bronze collected by 15-cap Reims midfielder Marvin Martin.

Just missing out on a place on the podium is Watford’s Etienne Capoue, who’s gone on to make seven appearances for France.

Capoue captained the side on that day in 2009 with Sakho starting in defence, Sissoko lining up in midfield and Martin having to make do with 37 minutes off the bench.

The most talented French midfielder since Zizou pictured with Paul PogbaAFP or licensors

Anyone else switch international allegiance like Aubameyang?

Plenty of them.

Goalkeeper Johny Placide now finds himself keeping goal for Oldham Athletic with 20 caps for Haiti to his name.

Loic Nestor is a one-cap wonder for both France’s Under-21s and Guadeloupe, which is an impressive double.

His fellow defender Cheikh M’Bengue has made 26 appearances for Senegal as has Lamine Gassama, who’s picked up 31 caps.

Former West Ham midfielder Sofiane Feghouli was on the brink of a France call up under Raymond Domenech but turned down the opportunity and has now made 42 appearances for Algeria.

Bakary Sako, who represented Mali at Under-17s then switched to France then switched back again, has been capped 21 times.

Guess who?Reuters

Who’s failed to make the grade?

Five months after playing in that game a certain Gabriel Obertan signed for Man United, which was the highlight of a fairly underwhelming career.

If you were wondering what he’s up to now Obertan can be found in the Bulgarian Premier League.

Defender Paul Baysse has just returned to Bordeaux after ten years away from the club.

Yohan Mollo, who started on the right for France against Tunisia, has just been released by Fulham, while Jires Kembo Ekoko is at Turkish side Bursaspor.

But we’ve saved the best until last.

France’s goalscorer on the night was none other than David N’Gog, who was at Liverpool at the time.

He ensured cult status by scoring against Man United but that was about as good as it got. Penny for anyone who can tell us where he’s playing now*.

Mauro Icardi sparks huge speculation by posting ‘goodbye message’ on Instagram

Well well well… what do we have here then?

Mauro Icardi is one of the most sought-after players on the planet after developing into a world class striker at Inter Milan in the last few seasons.

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets have this brilliant offer when you sign up and bet a fiver Icardi is one of Serie A’s best playersAFP or licensors

The fiery Argentine hitman has scored an incredible 89 goals in 147 league appearances for the Italian giants.

So it’s no surprise to see rumours linking him away from the club, particularly with Inter lying 13 points off Serie A leaders Napoli and not even participating in Europe this season.

And his Instagram activity on Monday night certainly won’t have quashed any speculation.

What do we have here?

That’s because Icardi took to social media to post a cryptic goodbye message with the caption ‘Chau chau’.

The text itself also translates as “being able to say goodbye is to grow.”

Curious.

Real Madrid are being heavily linked with Icardi as a replacement to spice up their front line.

Reports suggest Zinedine Zidane is willing to offload either Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale to land Kylian MbappeAll three members of BBC have struggled this seasonGetty Images

There are questions over the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema with Real’s famed ‘BBC’ all struggling with form and fitness problems this season.

So has Icardi just dropped a major hint that a move is in the pipeline?

Liverpool fans go crazy for Andy Robertson after left-back’s performance against Man City

Dream Team FC
Liverpool fans go crazy for Andy Robertson after left-back’s performance against Man City

Forget Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson is the true hero at Liverpool this season.

The Scotland international – signed for a measly £8 million from Hull in the summer – has been blindingly good lately, well and truly nailing down the Reds troublesome left-back position.

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets have this brilliant offer when you sign up and bet a fiver

And in Liverpool’s stunning 4-3 victory over Manchester City this evening, Robertson had the game of his life up against Anfield villain Raheem Sterling.

Sterling has been emphatic so far this seasonAFP or licensors

In the clash with the Premier League leaders, Jurgen Klopp’s side pulled off a relentless pressing display that clearly rattled City’s defence and nullified their attack.

At kick-off, all eyes were firmly on Sterling – a Liverpool favourite before his move to the Etihad in 2015 – who’s scored 14 times in the league so far this season.

PLAY DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER Pick seven players to win £10k!

But it all went a bit wrong for the winger, who was jeered throughout by the Anfield crowd, while Robertson marked him out of the game.

As you’d expect, a large portion of Twitter was very impressed.

Andrew Robertson just sprinted from left-back & pressed City’s goalkeeper & left-back.

Build that man a statue.

— LFC Transfer Room (@LFCTransferRoom) January 14, 2018

Fantastic performance by Robertson. Kept his head throughout in a hugely pressurised game. He won more tackles (7) and made more interceptions (7) than any other player on the pitch today.

— DaveOCKOP (@DaveOCKOP) January 14, 2018

Andy Robertson is so good. Riise has finally been replaced.

— Matt (@FalseFirmino) January 14, 2018

The Kop are bellowing Andy Robertson's name and with good reason. His performance has been exceptional, caused Raheem Sterling to shortcircuit. He may have just made the left-back position his own.

— Dominic King (@DominicKing_DM) January 14, 2018

Robertson is an absolute steal at £8m. Up against Sterling and Walker today but didn’t flinch once. Brilliant in the tackle while getting forward on the overlap, too. Stunning performance.

— Leanne Prescott (@_lfcleanne) January 14, 2018

Robertson has been brilliant today!!! Energy!!! Love it!! @andrewrobertso5 what a performance

— John Arne Riise (@JARiiseOfficial) January 14, 2018

People laughed when I said Robertson's one of the best LBs in the division. Kept Sterling and Walker in his pocket. Maintain he can become one of the best in the world.

— RG (@registability) January 14, 2018

Robertson was phenomenal in the Derby. Even better here. Sterling in his back pocket since minute one. One of the best left back performances from any Liverpool player in years.

— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) January 14, 2018

One moment, late in the second-half when everyone was exhausted (including viewers in the stadium and at home), Robertson kept up his tremendous pressing play and absolutely terrified City’s back-line.

Starting off on the right flank with Bernardo Silva, Robertson chased down the Portuguese winger – who had no choice but to pass backwards to Kyle Walker.

Walker received the ball, but Robertson kept going.

And he only continues his pursuit when the right-back picks out John Stones in the middle.

Stones quickly swivels and picks out his goalkeeper, but the Liverpool defender doesn’t stop running.

This tiki-taka stuff is risky business; Robertson closes down Ederson who quickly passes to Nicolas Otamendi.

It gets tricky here for the big centre-back, who has no where else to play the ball as Roberto Firmino closes in.

Otamendi inevitably panics and loses the ball, much to the delight of the crowd.

Brilliant work all round.

More of the same, please?

West Ham and Spurs have just submitted their goal of the season contenders

Dream Team FC
West Ham and Spurs have just submitted their goal of the season contenders

Stop everything, folks.

Because we’ve just seen, quite possibly, two of the best goals of the season – in the same freakin’ match.

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets are offering this great offer when you sign up and bet a fiver

The first one came from West Ham’s Pedro Obiang, completely against the run of play.

On the 70th minute – and out of nowhere – Obiang hit an utterly sensational strike to put the Hammers in front.

REUTERS/Eddie Keogh Tidy indeed[/caption]

Up until that point, this one had been all Spurs – albeit a couple of good runs from Javier Hernandez.

In fact, Obiang’s goal was West Ham’s first shot of the match.

1 – Pedro Obiang's goal came from West Ham's first shot of any kind in this match; Spurs have had 20 in contrast. Blaster.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 4, 2018

Edging towards the Spurs box from the left flank, Obiang was more-or-less invited to shoot by their failure to close him down.

So, with that, he chose to rifle home an absolute thunderbolt past Hugo Lloris, into the top corner.

Need we remind you that this fixture was pretty tasty last time too, with Slaven Bilic’s Hammers coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 back in October’s Carabao Cup clash.

PLAY DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER Pick seven players to win £5k!

And this one will be equally as memorable, with Spurs’ Son Heung-min producing a shot worthy of competing with Obiang’s less than 15 minutes later to make it 1-1.

MATTHEW CHILDS Go on my Son![/caption]

As the Hammers defence opened up ahead of him, Erik Lamela was able to pick out Son with ease.

With a brief look up, the South Korean then fires home past a helpless Adrian and into the top corner.

Anything Obiang can do, eh?
